Holy Boldness
For more than 30 years I have worked with pastors and laity who were
either planters or who were working in renewal projects. I have been
praying that they would have a spirit of Holy Boldness. What do I
mean?

Loving Yourself
A lesson I learned some years ago is that we can’t love others if we
don’t love ourselves. This truth is based on these words of Jesus,
“And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'” (Matt 22:
39) Jesus presupposes that you love yourself. Are there pastors and
Christian leaders who don’t love themselves? That answer is
unequivocally, “YES!” Why is that?

Lincoln's Day of Prayer
I have been working on a Civil War project. I have been putting in
book form everything that relates to the Civil War that was published
in my denomination’s paper, the Church Advocate. I was fascinated
as I listened to the debate about the National Day of Prayer. I was
deeply touched by the following and felt it worthy of sharing with you.

Knowing Jesus
I have been in the church all my life. I have been serving as a pastor
since I was 18 years old. But, in recent years there has been for me a
growing concern. I’m convinced that many Christians who are also
very active in Church simply don’t really know Jesus. I’m not
doubting that they are Christian. They just haven’t taken the time to
really get to know Him and their lives haven’t been impacted as they
might have, had they really learned who this Jesus of Nazareth really
is and the claims He has on their lives.

Your Ministry Niche
Almost every pastor wants to attract young families with children.
But not every pastor is gifted to reach those people.  That
demographic only makes up a very small percentage of the
population.  What about the rest of the people in the community?  Do
they count?  Who did God gift you and your church to reach?

Renewing
Churches are constantly facing the prospect of renewal. Anytime a
church thinks it has arrived, the game changes. We have to work
constantly to stay current.

Momentum
Momentum is a word usually used in sports. It means that one team
is on a roll. Everything is going their way. But momentum can shift.
Does momentum apply in the work of the Church? Absolutely!

My Dream
I have made close to an average of 150 on-site visits to local
churches a year for the last 32 years. I visited a church in my dreams
last night and feel very much led to write it down for you.

Basic Purpose
There are so many claims on our time. Many of them are good. But,
they may not be what is best for us. We have to determine with God's
help what our basic purpose is in life. Can we stay focused to fulfill
that purpose?

A Renewal Pastor
I recently was conducting some training for persons working in
renewal. I was being pressed about the role of the pastor. I indicated
that I felt renewal in a local church couldn't happen apart from a
quality pastor. Here are some thoughts on what indispensable
characteristics are required for a pastor in renewal?

It's Jesus and People!
Many Christians in churches are always looking for the magic elixir
that will break open the door have people crashing in. The Bible has a
simple solution that too often gets lost in the business of church
building and administration.

Progressive Revelation of Vision
One of the most important jobs of a leader is to have and cast
vision. It is a special gift when a person can look at the present
reality and see into the future about what can potentially be
achieved. In this missile, I discuss four steps to shaping the future. It
takes all four, but unless the dream is very small one person may not
have all the gifts to do this.

Called to Serve
I believe that when God calls people to be pastors, He calls us to be
servants. There is a temptation to become confused about the call.
We can mistake it to be a call to privilege.

Financial Stress for Churches
Churches can be very sensitive to economic swings in a community.
What are the options for growth and survival in tough economic
times?

Attraction and Incarnational Outreach
There seems to be a movement to simply promote incarnational and
ditch attractional outreach. Incarnational outreach involves the kind
of things Jesus would do if he were literally here. Attraction outreach
include the things a church does to have people walk through the door
once. You need both to survive.

Starting a New Service
Our church really doesn't need a new service does it?  I have heard
that question phrased in a variety of ways and in many different
settings.  It is a simple fact, starting new churches is the most
effective method of evangelism in the world.

Farming a Community
Outreach is the things a church does to walk people through the door
once.  Evangelism is the one on one sharing of one’s faith in Jesus
Christ with another person.  If outreach is to be effective, it needs to
be intentional and intensive.

Church Is Hard Work
Most Christians want their local church to do well.  I've only been to a
few places where the people of a church told me they wanted their
church to decline. Spiritual renewal is always the first and most
important step required in renewing a church.

On Being Grateful
God is so good. He knows what is best for us. The Bible never calls us
to be successful but clearly calls us to be obedient. Obedience and
faithfulness are always rewarded. Maybe not always in the way we
would like but…

On Doing the Homework What is homework? It is the behinds the
scene work that nobody sees unless it isn't done. Seldom do people
get credit for it. Seldom do people say you did a good job doing that
homework. All they see is the end product without understanding how
that successful event happened.

Building a Church's Self Esteem
Barnabas was known as the encourager.  For a church to have a
healthy self-esteem the pastor will have to have some of the traits of
Barnabas.  Unfortunately, if the pastor does not have a good healthy
self-esteem, the church won’t.  Why?  Read more to find out.

Building a Pastor's Self Esteem
The pastor is a key player in building healthy self-esteem among
people in a church.  I have pastored since 1958.  I was ordained in
1965.  I was 31 years on a Conference staff.  I have watched as
dysfunctional pastors attracted dysfunctional people and then
watched as what they built disintegrated.

A Christian Spirit
The following are three articles taken from the Advocates. They are
in Volume 4 of “A History of the Churches of God as presented by the
Church Advocate.” I am not making a political statement with this.
Frankly, I feel neither party is exhibiting a Christian Spirit.

My Witness
This is the 14th year for the Missiles. I have shared thoughts on
whatever seemed important to me at the time. I shared information
for pastors and churches. This past week it just seemed important to
me to share my own personal witness. God is so good..
